Lacrosse season ends in double overtime
BATAVIA, NY – Surrendering a five-goal lead in the second half of Saturdays women's lacrosse game at Genesee Community College, the Herkimer Generals lost to the Cougars 13-12 in double overtime.
Herkimer 4-6 (2-0) had a chance to make it to a sub-regional game with a win over Genesee despite losing their last two home games to the Cannoneers and Tribunes.
Herkimer jumped out to an early 5-0 lead within the first seven minutes thanks to goals from Courtney Canavan (Baldwinsville, NY), Emilie Coufal (Syracuse, NY), Ashley Dennis (Cooperstown, NY), and Alexis Caughey (Cortland, NY).
By half, that five goal lead expanded to six (9-4), but the Generals would not play the second half with leading goal scorer Canavan, receiving her second yellow card in the final couple minutes of the first half.
In the second, Herkimer was outscored 7-2, causing the match to go to overtime. The Generals lead with 53 seconds left in the first overtime, thanks to a goal by Nicole Purcell (McGraw, NY), but the Cougars scored the final two goals of the game - one with seven seconds left in the first overtime and one with 55 seconds left in double overtime - rallying for the 13-12 win.
In the net for the Generals was Kristin Menge (Warwick, NY). The sophomore had 24 saves in the match.
