#2 Herkimer softball sweeps #10 Onondaga Lazers at home

Herkimer, NY-- #2 Herkimer softball comes from behind in two games versus #10 Onondaga yesterday afternoon.  In game one Onondaga scored early putting pressure on the Generals scoring one run in the first.  Herkimer lead-off slapper #5 Taylor Fry (Gasport, NY) roped one into right-center which the defense couldn't handle.  Fry was able to capitalize on the miss read from the Lazer outfield and scored the tying run on an in the park home run.  Onondaga responded in the second challenging Herkimer with another four runs.  

The Generals remained unproductive until the fourth where they were able to scratch one run, but it was the fifth inning where they made their mark.  The rally began with one out as #14 Lacy Nealy (Montrose, PA) drew a walk.  Pinch running for Nealy was #21 Alexis Ramos (Utica, NY).  #8 Morgan Sgarlata (Oneida, NY) continued the inning hitting a hard ground ball to third base which resulted in an error leaving both Ramos on second and Sgarlata on first.  Next up was sophomore #33 Bailee Haddad (Frankfort, NY) who hit a one-run line drive double which closed the score gap 5-3 with runners on second and third and one out.  Herkimer freshman #1 Allison Lockwood (Windsor, NY) tied it up scoring both runners on a line drive single. Lockwood scored later that inning from an overthrow from the Lazer's third baseman to give Herkimer their first lead of the game. Onondaga remained scoreless and Herkimer would add on two more in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 8-5 to finish it.

Game two for the Generals felt like a repeat of the first to start.  Again, Onondaga took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning.  Herkimer wouldn't tie it up until the third from a line drive single by Fry scoring Ramos who had earned a bloop hit single to start the inning.  Ramos had stolen second base putting her in scoring position for Fry.  Onondaga would regain the lead in the fourth 2-1, but the Generals sparked a fifth inning rally once again, this time scoring 11 runs.  Every Herkimer hitter in the lineup reached on base and every Herkimer hitter would score.  

This fifth inning rally began with Fry leading off with another line drive single.  Next up was freshman captain #25 Shannon Moore (Norwich, NY) who hit a ground ball to the shortstop and reached first as Fry beat out the race to second on the fielder's choice.  #20 Molly McGuire hit a short line drive single to load the bases for Lacy Nealy who hit her first collegiate grand slam which gave the Generals a 5-2 lead.  The rest of the lineup would reach and score before the Lazers recorded their first out of the inning.  Onondaga was deflated and remained scoreless in their last at bats falling to Herkimer 12-2 in five innings.

Herkimer looks to continue their success this weekend as they travel to Genesee Community College Saturday April 22nd 1 & 3 p.m., and Niagara Community College Sunday April 23rd 12 & 2 p.m.
