The 2025–2026 Herkimer Women's Basketball campaign tipped off in thrilling fashion Wednesday night, as the Generals earned an impressive 79–75 victory over arch-rival Mohawk Valley Community College.
Coming off last year's Region 3 runner-up finish — the program's best in nearly 30 years — the Generals entered the season with high expectations, and their opening performance showed why. Despite featuring a young roster of 10 players, including eight freshmen, Herkimer wasted no time setting the tone.
Led by standout freshman point guard Nevaeh Spencer, the Generals jumped out to a commanding 25–13 lead after the first quarter. Spencer was sensational in her collegiate debut, logging 39 minutes and stuffing the stat sheet with 24 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals, and 7 assists.
Herkimer carried a 42–31 advantage into halftime, fueled by the sharp shooting of sophomore transfers Angelina Deitz (15 points) and Mariah Freeman (8 points), who combined for four three-pointers in the first half. Freshman Jordan Bellinger also provided a spark from deep, hitting two threes and finishing with 10 points in her debut.
Mohawk Valley made several pushes in the second half, cutting the deficit to as few as six points, but Herkimer's composure never wavered. Behind Spencer's leadership and the steady play of freshman Amiya Carter (15 points), the Generals held firm to secure the victory.
Herkimer returns to action on Saturday, November 8, when they host North Country Community College at 1 p.m. in another key Mountain Valley matchup.
