Generals Move to 2-0 with Conference Win Over North Country
The Herkimer Generals Women's Basketball team moved to 2-0 on Saturday, besting Mountain Valley Conference foe, North Country 63-47.
The Herkimer Generals Women's Basketball team moved to 2-0 on Saturday, besting Mountain Valley Conference foe, North Country 63-47. The Generals were led by Freshman Point Guard's Nevaeh Spencer's (Bronx) 14 pts, 12 reb performance to secure the victory.
Herkimer jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, before North Country went on a 13-0 run to put the Generals on their heels. After a quick timeout, Herkimer rallied to take a 17-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, a lead they would never relinquish. Freshman guard Amiya Carter (Newark, NJ) put the Generals on her back in the first half, scoring all 16 of her points, before leaving in the third quarter with a knee injury.
North Country remained close until the last seconds of the third quarter when Freshman Guard Molly Rifanburg (Edmeston) hit a three-pointer in from of the Generals bench, that changed the momentum of the game. She would add another clutch three in the 4th, finishing with 8 pts. The Generals led 42-40, and then went on a 15-0 run behind Spencer and the presence of 6'2" Freshman Junel Beaubrun (Bronx), to extend the lead to 57-40. Freshman Guards Jordan Bellinger (Oneonta) and Brin Whiteman (Cherry Valley), would each hit threes in the final minutes to complete the 63-47 win for Herkimer.
Herkimer returns to the hardwood on Wednesday as they travel to Hudson Valley for another Mountain Valley Conference matchup.
